Czechs Hold Portugal to a Tense Draw

Ronaldo Waits on the Sidelines

Holes Swoops in to Secure a Point for Czech Republic

Lisbon, Portugal - Cristiano Ronaldo was left on the bench as Portugal toiled to a frustrating 0-0 draw against the Czech Republic in their Euro 2024 opener on Saturday.

The 38-year-old superstar, who is now without a club after leaving Manchester United last month, watched on as his teammates struggled to break down a resolute Czech defense.

Portugal dominated possession but lacked creativity in the final third, with their best chance falling to Rafael Leao, who fired wide from a promising position just before half-time.

The Czechs grew in confidence as the game wore on and almost took the lead in the 82nd minute when Tomas Soucek's header was well saved by Diogo Costa.

Ronaldo was introduced in the closing stages, but it was Portugal substitute Ricardo Horta who came closest to scoring, hitting the crossbar with a fierce strike in the 90th minute.

Conclusion

The draw leaves Portugal with work to do in their bid to qualify for the knockout stages, while the Czech Republic will be buoyed by their impressive defensive display. The point also extends their unbeaten run against Portugal to three games.
